Toddlers are very active so they need plenty of energy and nutrients. Remember to include these sorts of foods every day:

  • 50-100g vegetables
  • 1½ pieces of fruit
  • 2-3 slices bread spread with margarine (e.g. Rama)
  • 50-100 g potatoes, rice, pasta, pulses
  • 300 ml milk (± 2 glasses)
  • ½ slice cheese
  • 60 g meat, chicken, fish, egg
  • 1 tablespoon of liquid margarine (e.g. Rama), oil
  • 1 liter drinks (incl. milk), thus ± 3 glasses left for other drinks

By this stage children are growing very quickly and have formed their own likes and dislikes about food. However, they still need a healthy and varied diet.

Toddlers can be fussy eaters. They may love certain foods - spaghetti, potatoes or rice - and hate others. Don’t worry; just make sure you use a range of ingredients to make balanced and delicious meals. You could, for example, experiment with different sauces. One day you might prepare a tomato sauce, the next day you could add some cheese or make a sauce with minced meat, fresh tomatoes and carrots. Just add a  tablespoon of margarine (e.g. Rama) to provide a good source of the essential fats that the body needs for healthy growth and development.
