Balanced nutrition is as important for the brain as it is for the body. If this is new to you, please let us explain in more detail.
The brain is developing throughout life. The brain starts growing before birth and the brain achieves about 90% of its adult size by the age of five. Although the brain is fully grown by the age of fice, the brain keeps developing from childhood into adulthood.
In addition to factors such as social stimulation, education and parental care, the brain needs important nutrients throughout life. We get these nutrients through the food we eat.
Some nutrients are important building blocks of brain cells and the connections between cells. Other nutrients play a role in transferring information between cells.
Let us now introduce different nutrients for the brain:
Fatty acids including ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), EPA & DHA, together with B-vitamins (B1, B6,
B12, folic acid) are important nutrients for the brain.
DHA is a building block of the brain.
ALA is an essential fatty acid that the body can't make and therefore must come from our diet.
Vitamins B6, B12 and folate play a role in functioning of the brain.
Vitamin B1 is needed for the energy release from food to the brain.
Please see the short animation-movie ‘Discover the world of Fats’ (CHECK FINAL NAMING) for what these nutrients do exactly and why they are important for the body and the brain.
Rama's continuous research.
To further increase the understanding of the role of nutrients on the brain and to help emphasize
the benefits of nutrients that are important for the brain, Unilever, the company behind Rama Idea! started a science program also in collaboration with international research partners.
