Healthy cooking and eating can seem complicated. To make things easier for you, we've made a list of ten easy steps to serve as an everyday guide for you and your family. These are the ten most important things to remember. If you like, you can print them out and stick them on your fridge – this will remind you how easy it is to make healthier choices.

  1. Base your meals on starchy foods such as bread, rice, pasta and potatoes. And whenever you can, try to choose wholegrain varieties.
  2. Cut down on saturated fat when preparing kids' dishes and for a healthy choice use vegetable oils and spreads as well as products such as Cremefine to replace dairy cream.
  3. Your family should eat lots of fruit and veggies. Five portions a day is a healthy aim. So why not serve a few vegetable sticks with a tasty dip as a starter before dinner?
  4. Have fish twice a week. It can be prepared in so many different ways that your family is bound to find new favourites.
  5. Try to eat less salt and learn to love other spices and fresh herbs. You can even grow herbs on the kitchen windowsill. The latter is also an excellent activity to involve your kids.
  6. If you have the time, prepare healthy stews or soups in advance and freeze them for busy days.
  7. Broaden your family's culinary horizon by sharing recipes with your friends. Ask your kids' friends what they like as another source of inspiration.
  8. Try to cut down on sugar. Go for vegetables that provide natural sweetness, like carrots or corn. Give your kids fresh fruit instead of sugary treats.
  9. Enjoy your family meals and always take enough time to eat them. Your kids will profit from time spent together at the table - meals are an excellent opportunity for sharing the day’s adventures.
  10. Go for homemade food and seasonal ingredients rather than ready-made meals, take-aways, or fast food. You might discover that cooking can be a very relaxing, fun activity.
